Sectional point repair for San Diego sewer lines
A failing sewer line in San Diego does not always need a full liner. If the camera turns up one root-filled joint or one crack and the surrounding pipe is healthy, a sectional sleeve a few feet long can fix that spot from inside, without excavation and at a fraction of the time.

One joint, not the whole line
A camera run through a San Diego clay lateral often shows a single joint where a root has pushed in and widened the gap, with the rest of the pipe clean and aligned. Lining the entire run to fix one joint is defensible but not always necessary. A sectional point repair places a short liner over just that joint, cures it there, and leaves the rest of the pipe as it was. The repair is the same cured-in-place material used for full-length work, so the fixed spot has the same strength and the same expected life. The difference is cost and time: a few hours instead of a day.
How a sleeve is installed
After the line is jetted and the defect is located precisely by footage from the cleanout, a fiberglass or felt sleeve of two to six feet is soaked in resin and rolled onto an inflatable bladder. The bladder is worked along the pipe on rods or a cable until the camera confirms it is centered on the defect. It is then inflated, pressing the sleeve against the pipe wall, and held while the resin cures. The packer is deflated and withdrawn, and a final camera pass confirms the sleeve is tight, smooth, and has not shifted. Any branch covered by the sleeve is reopened. The cured sleeve adds very little to the pipe wall, so there is no step for solids to catch on at either end, and the camera should show a smooth transition in both directions.
The defects a sleeve suits
Point repairs work best on a localized failure in a pipe that is otherwise in service condition. In San Diego County that most often means a single clay joint opened by a tree root, a circumferential crack where a section settled slightly, a small hole punched by a contractor's probe or a fence post, or a short length of channeled cast iron under a slab between two sound stretches. A sleeve can also seal a leaking connection where a newer ABS line was tied into older clay with a poor transition fitting, a common sight in San Diego houses that were remodeled in the 1980s and 1990s. It does not fix a belly, an offset larger than the sleeve can bridge, or a run where the material is failing everywhere.
When one patch becomes false economy
The temptation after a backup in a San Diego house is to fix the spot that caused it and stop. The recording should settle whether that is wise. If the other joints in the lateral are already showing hairline root intrusion, or the cast iron shows the same thinning along its whole bottom and happened to break through at one place first, a sleeve buys a year or two before the next call. In those cases the honest recommendation is a full liner, and the report should show the footage that supports it. A San Diego owner preparing to sell is in a different position: a sleeve over the one defect noted by a buyer's inspector may be exactly the right scope.
Under the driveway, under the slab
The value of a point repair is highest where the defect sits under something expensive. A joint under the driveway, a crack under a pool deck, a bad section beneath the slab in the middle of a San Diego house: each would require cutting and restoring the surface for an open repair. The sleeve travels to the spot from the cleanout and nothing above it is touched. Where no cleanout exists, one is added at the foundation and remains for the next inspection.
Permits and records
A sectional repair on private property is permitted lateral work and TSR Trenchless, Inc. pulls the plumbing permit. A sleeve at the property line or near the main may also need a right-of-way permit. The owner receives the recordings showing the defect before and the sleeve after, with footage marks, plus the permit sign-off and a written warranty. Questions we hear about sectional point repair
What is a sectional point repair?+
A short cured-in-place liner, typically two to six feet long, positioned over a single defect with a packer and cured in place. It bonds to the host pipe on both sides of the problem and leaves the rest of the line untouched. It is the same material as a full liner, applied only where the camera shows damage.
When is a point repair the wrong choice?+
When the pipe has more than one or two defects, when the material is uniformly deteriorated even if only one spot has failed so far, or when the line is Orangeburg. Patching one joint in a clay lateral whose other joints are all open to roots means paying for another patch next year. The recording makes that pattern obvious.
Can a point repair be done under a San Diego driveway?+
Yes, and that is one of its best uses. The sleeve travels to the defect on a bladder from the cleanout, is expanded there, and cures where it sits. Nothing above the pipe is disturbed. The alternative, a spot excavation through the concrete, costs more in restoration than the repair itself.
How long does it take and how long is the water off?+
A single sleeve is usually installed and cured within a few hours, including the cleaning and camera passes before and after. The drains are closed during that period and reopened the same day. Water supply is not affected. Several sleeves in one line may take a full day of drain downtime.
How do I know if my line qualifies?+
Only a camera inspection can tell. The technician records the full lateral, counts and locates the defects, and recommends a sleeve, a full liner or another method in writing. Call (858) 212-0070 to arrange the inspection at your San Diego property. Estimates are free; call now.
