Cured-in-place sewer pipe lining in San Diego
A cured-in-place liner turns a cracked, rooted or channeled sewer pipe into a smooth jointless one without removing it. This page explains what the liner has to survive in a San Diego line, how it is prepared, cured and reconnected, and what the owner sees before and after.

What a liner has to deal with in a San Diego pipe
The liners installed in San Diego go into two very different hosts. In the cast iron under a slab, the pipe wall has usually been eaten away along the bottom, so the liner must span a channel where there is no pipe at all and bond to sound metal on either side. In the clay lateral outside, the liner must pass through joints that have shifted a fraction of an inch against each other after decades of wet winters and dry summers, and it must bridge the gaps where roots were cut out. A liner that is properly sized and fully cured does both, which is why it has become the default repair for the postwar housing that makes up most of San Diego County.
Deciding the pipe can take a liner
The recording from the inspection answers four questions. Is the pipe continuous, or is there a collapse the camera cannot pass? Are the offsets small enough for a liner to negotiate without folding? Is there a belly that holds water, which a liner would preserve rather than correct? And is the diameter adequate for the building it serves? When the answers are favorable, lining proceeds. When one is not, the report says where and why, and the owner is shown the footage so the problem spot can be excavated or the whole run can be burst instead.
Cleaning and measuring the host
Lining begins with hydro jetting to remove roots, grease and scale, followed by a second camera pass to confirm the pipe wall is exposed and to measure the run from the access point to the end of the repair. In cast iron the jetter uses a nozzle and pressure chosen so a thin wall is not blown out. Roots that have grown through a joint are cut flush. Any protruding branch connection is noted so the crew knows where to reinstate it afterward. Only after this pass is the liner cut to length and wet out with resin. Measuring matters because a liner that is too short leaves the last joint unprotected, and one that runs past the property line into the main has to be cut back under a separate permit.
Installing and curing
The saturated liner is inverted into the pipe with air or water pressure, or pulled into place and inflated, so it presses tight against the host. It is then cured by circulating hot water, by steam or by a UV light train, depending on the liner material and the window available. For a single-family lateral in San Diego the whole sequence from jetting to final video is generally finished in one working day, with the drains closed for most of it. Branch lines that were covered by the liner are reopened from inside with a robotic cutter guided by camera, and a cleanout is reinstated or added. For an under-slab cast iron drain in a San Diego house, the same steps happen from inside: the toilets are lifted, the liner goes in through the closet flange or a floor cleanout, and the floor is never opened.
What you see before and after
The pre-lining video shows the problem: roots fanning across a joint, a crack running with the pipe, a trough of exposed soil where the bottom of the cast iron used to be. The post-lining video shows a continuous, uniform wall from the access point to the end of the repair, with each branch opening cut cleanly and no wrinkles or lifts. Both recordings belong to the owner and should be kept with the permit sign-off and the warranty, because a future buyer or a city lateral inspection will ask for them. Verifying the installer
Because the liner is a structural pipe that will serve for decades, the installer's qualifications matter as much as the method. The contractor's standing on the installer registry can be checked at the installer's CIPP profile on curedinplacepipe.net, and the standards behind that listing are set out at the cured-in-place pipe reference. Questions we hear about sewer pipe lining (cipp)
What does a CIPP liner actually fix in a San Diego sewer line?+
It bridges open clay joints so roots have nowhere to enter, seals cracks and small holes, and gives channeled cast iron a new continuous floor. The result is a jointless pipe with a smooth interior that carries flow better than the old one did. It does not fix a sag, because the liner follows the shape of the host pipe.
Does the liner shrink the pipe too much?+
The liner wall is a fraction of an inch thick, so a four-inch line loses a small amount of diameter. Because the interior is smooth and jointless, flow capacity is generally equal to or better than the rough, rooted original. Where a line is already undersized for the building, the technician will say so and recommend bursting instead.
How is the liner cured, and does it matter which way?+
Hot water, steam and ultraviolet light are the three methods. Hot water is the longest cycle and the most forgiving; steam is faster and common on residential laterals; UV uses a light train pulled through a glass-fiber liner and cures quickly with precise control. The installer picks based on liner type, length and the hours the drains can be closed.
How long will the liner last?+
Cured-in-place liners are designed for a service life on the order of fifty years, and the owner receives a written warranty from the installer. The liner is a structural pipe in its own right, so if the clay or cast iron around it continues to deteriorate the liner carries the load on its own.
What is the first step toward lining my line?+
A camera inspection, which confirms that the pipe can accept a liner and measures the exact length and diameter. TSR Trenchless, Inc. schedules that visit, delivers the recording and quotes from it. Call (858) 212-0070 to set a time at your San Diego property. Estimates are free; call now.
